Objective / Goal of the activity

Raising awareness about human rights and the importance of defending them.

Description

Letters change people's lives and help to ban injustice out of the world. That is why Amnesty International organizes the Writing Marathon every December. And ESN Gent is also participating!

During the Writing Marathon, letters and petitions are sent from all over the world to ministers and presidents to urge them to put an end to human rights violations. The people whose rights are not respected receive thousands of solidarity messages and support cards.

Nearly 6 million letters, cards and signatures were produced worldwide last year. Again, all records were broken. Every letter counts: the more letters, the greater the pressure on the person concerned to tackle the injustice.

Result of the activity

The students wrote 30 letters in total. During the event, they learned how human rights are violated in some countries. Many of them were shocked about some particular cases they did not know of (even in their own countries).
