Description of the event:
Volunteers were gathered to clean the riverside of the Aura-river in Turku together with local citizens. The date of the event was after a major public festival day (May Day) and around the riverside was found for example a lot of metal bottle caps, glass, paper decorations etc. We promoted the event to international students and had our own "ESN-delegation" participating. The head of Environmental affairs of Turku gave a speech before the actual cleaning started and all found trashes were reported with a form by the volunteers for the use of researchers.

How did they contribute to the event:
Siistibiitsi was the main organiser of the event and they provided the volunteers with vests, plastic bags, gloves and "trash-pickers". They also served tea for the volunteers. They co-operated for the event with a lot of local organisations such as the student housing association TYS. ESN Uni Turku promoted their Facebook event and gathered the "ESN-Delegation" to participate with the local volunteers.
Additional Comments / Outcome of the activity:

The day of the event was very cold and it was snowing also for a while and since it was an outdoor event, the weather wasn't so appealing to attract more international volunteers. There were more local volunteers but our ESN-delegation had fun together collecting trash and two hours went by quickly! It was really easy for us ESNers to jump into an existing event that was well organised, all we needed to do was promote the event and show up. The international students enjoyed volunteering together with locals and they would have not known about the event without ESN since the event descriptions were sadly only in Finnish and Swedish. After this event local ESN sections will be looking into more possibilities to co-operate with the organisers!
