Goal of the Activity

The primary aim of the Kindness Mission is to support international students living in Turkey in establishing stronger, more natural and sustainable bonds with the local community through their daily life practices, to strengthen social and cultural integration processes, and to increase social awareness. The initiative aims to encourage individuals from different cultural backgrounds to connect with their host society not only through academic or formal structures, but also through simple yet meaningful interactions that occur in daily life.

The tasks designed within the programme are structured to support international students' active participation in Turkish social life. Tasks such as saying ‘kolay gelsin’ (have a good day) to a shopkeeper, wishing a worker a good day, leaving a thank-you note, or making a small gesture provided an environment for learning that integrated language learning into daily life by allowing students to use Turkish in a natural and safe context. These interactions have also strengthened intercultural dialogue and contributed to the development of mutual understanding.

The Kindness Mission is based on the understanding that social and cultural integration is possible not only through large-scale projects but also through small, recurring behaviours in everyday life. This approach supports international students in moving beyond being mere observers of the local community and becoming active and responsible members of their environment. The programme aims to create a social adaptation process shaped by empathy, respect and mutual interaction.

One of the key objectives of the activity is to support mental health and wellbeing. Kindness-based tasks contribute to reducing participants' stress levels, alleviating feelings of loneliness and strengthening their sense of belonging. Tasks such as feeding or watering street animals encourage participants to connect not only with people but also with all living creatures in their environment, reinforcing feelings of compassion, responsibility, and kindness. Such actions deepen students' social awareness by introducing sensitivity towards street animals, an important part of Türkiye's local lifestyle culture.

The programme also encourages participants to develop a sense of active citizenship and volunteerism. Environmental clean-up, tidying up communal areas and caring for animals help individuals forge stronger ties with the city they live in and increase their sense of social responsibility. These tasks demonstrate that creating social impact is an achievable, sustainable practice that can be integrated into everyday life. Kindness Mission also serves as an online awareness-raising campaign conducted through digital platforms. Participants document and share their tasks through photos and videos, making individual acts of kindness visible and helping these actions spread by inspiring others. Thus, individual behaviours transform into a collective social impact and awareness movement.

Finally, one of the fundamental objectives of the Kindness Mission is to implement this activity as a sustainable and repeatable model within the scope of each Social Impact Days and to create a growing culture of kindness with new participants each year. Through the continuity of the activity, it is aimed to provide long-term contributions to the social integration processes of international students and to establish lasting bonds with local communities.

Description

Kindness Mission is an experience-based, participatory social awareness event organised as part of Social Impact Days. It lasts five days, with participants actively engaging in the process by completing shared tasks each day. The programme is designed with a gradual structure, progressing from easy to difficult tasks, and from simple interactions to actions requiring more time, effort and emotional awareness.

During the first days of the event, participants engaged in the process through low-threshold tasks such as smiling, greeting, complimenting, or displaying small acts of kindness. These tasks encouraged participants to communicate more consciously and openly with their surroundings, aiming to reduce barriers to social interaction. In the following days, the tasks deepened through small gestures towards the immediate environment, material or emotional sharing, and meaningful one-on-one interactions.

The tasks in the middle stage of the programme consisted of actions centred on building emotional bonds and empathy, such as written thank-yous, heartfelt messages, quality time spent without phones, and remembering past acts of kindness. These tasks supported participants in recognising both their own feelings and the efforts and contributions of others.

Towards the end of the programme, tasks were structured to require more physical effort, time and creativity from participants. Activities such as cleaning communal areas, contributing to environmental clean-ups, preparing small surprises or engaging in cultural sharing aimed to demonstrate how individual acts of kindness can be reflected in the community. The self-compassion-focused tasks in the final stage of the programme aimed to strengthen participants' relationship with themselves and increase their inner awareness.

Participants documented the tasks they completed with photographs or videos and shared them via a digital platform, thereby becoming part of the process; motivation and continuity were supported through a gamification and scoring system. This structure created a sense of collective social impact by making individual actions visible.

Kindness Mission offers an inclusive experience that centres on social cohesion, empathy, awareness, and well-being, demonstrating how small, everyday acts of kindness can collectively create powerful social change. The event aims for participants to carry this awareness into their daily lives, not only during the event but also afterwards.
