The main objective of this tour was to introduce international students to one of the most unique and deeply rooted traditions in Spain: Holy Week. Although religious celebrations exist worldwide, the way Semana Santa is lived in Spain is very distinctive, combining art, history, devotion and cultural heritage.
Our city is especially known for its Holy Week processions, which are considered among the most important and impressive in the country. For this reason, we organized this activity together with JOHC, an association dedicated to promoting and spreading Holy Week traditions especially among young people. The aim was to help students better understand Spanish culture and immerse themselves in a tradition they will experience during their stay.
This activity has been organized by ESN Valladolid in collaboration with JOHC (young people from brotherhoods), who work to preserve and share the cultural heritage of Holy Week with younger generations. Due to the strong cultural importance of Semana Santa and the curiosity it generates among international students, this is a highly valued and demanded activity.
During the tour, we gathered the international students in a central square of the city and started a guided walk through different key locations related to the brotherhoods and the processions. At each stop, we provided short explanations about the history of the cofradÃas, the meaning of the pasos (religious sculptures), the symbolism of the clothing, and the atmosphere of the processions that take place during Holy Week.
The activity allowed students to understand the cultural, artistic and social importance of Semana Santa, preparing them to fully appreciate the celebrations happening throughout the week. After finishing the tour, we took some time to share impressions and continue socializing together over a coffee.
