Goal of the Activity

Raise awareness about renewable energy

Description

ESN Brescia organized a day trip to Val di Scalve to visit the ruins of the Gleno Dam, one of the most significant hydroelectric disasters in Italian history. Built in the early 20th century, the dam collapsed in 1923 due to structural flaws and poor construction practices, releasing millions of cubic meters of water and causing the death of hundreds of people in the valley below. Today, the remains of the dam stand as a historical reminder of the importance of engineering safety and environmental responsibility.

The group hiked through the mountains to reach the site, guided by an environmental engineer specialized in hydroelectric energy. Along the way, she explained not only the history of the dam and the reasons for its collapse, but also the principles of how hydroelectric plants work, why they are essential in Italy today for producing clean and renewable energy, and the balance between exploiting natural resources and protecting the environment.

For Erasmus students, the activity was both a cultural and educational experience: they discovered a dramatic chapter of Italian history, reflected on the importance of sustainable engineering, and learned about the role of renewable energy in addressing today’s environmental challenges, all while enjoying the natural beauty of the Alps.
