The goal of the activity was to promote cultural participation and social integration of Erasmus students within the local community of Palermo by giving them the opportunity to experience a high-level cultural event at the Teatro Massimo. Through attending the opera Aleko / Pagliacci, the activity aimed to showcase European and Italian cultural heritage, foster intercultural dialogue, and help students better understand local traditions and artistic expressions. Additionally, the event encouraged experiential learning outside the academic context, countered cultural stereotypes related to opera and classical music, and strengthened the sense of belonging of international students by actively involving them in the cultural life of the city.
On the 25th of November 2025, ESN Palermo attended a cultural event at the Teatro Massimo of Palermo, one of the most iconic opera houses in Italy. The group was composed of 19 Erasmus students, one event responsible, and three additional ESNers, who actively contributed to the organization, coordination, and smooth running of the activity, supporting participants throughout the evening.
The group attended the opera diptych “Aleko / Pagliacci”, which opened the 2025/2026 opera season at the Teatro Massimo. Aleko is a one-act opera by Sergei Rachmaninoff, written in 1892 as his final work at the Moscow Conservatory and inspired by Alexander Pushkin’s poem The Gypsies. The opera tells a dramatic story centered on themes of love, jealousy, freedom, and exclusion, following Aleko’s tragic fate after suspecting his beloved Zemfira of betrayal. It is a relatively short but emotionally intense work, enriched with choruses, dances, and expressive arias. This production was particularly significant, as Aleko had never before been performed in Italy as the opening of an opera season.
The show started at 6:30 PM and offered Erasmus students a unique opportunity to experience European operatic heritage, while fostering cultural awareness and social integration within the local community of Palermo.
